2026 Race Report: Jemicy: Scrap Dragon, Tandem Templar, Dragon Wagon

Here's a Sculpture!

Jemicy: Scrap Dragon, Tandem Templar, Dragon Wagon

Scrap Dragon is a 3-pilot sculpture with a large fanged head. It’s one of three entries from the Jemicy School of Owings Mills where the industrial design class teaches Kinetic Sculpture Design and Racing.

See both undercarriage and skyline in one convenient photo.

Each of its custom front wheels got traction from two sets of mountain bike tires side-by-side.

After safety inspection and review, the Rampmaster signaled Scrap Dragon was cleared to enter the water with his purple trombone.

The head produced a beautiful splash.

Jemicy students rely on buoyancy calculations instead of water testing. Paddling appeared neither choreographed nor ergonomic.

Scrap Dragon was still going for ACE at the water exit, one of the biggest challenges, especially for sculptures with all drive wheels in the back. Here pilots “walked the wheels” to manually propel the sculpture onto land. ACE pilots’ feet on the ground cannot push the sculpture, but those feet can push the tires like this.

After successfully maintaining their ACE exiting the water, a pilot fired off green smoke.

Here’s their mandatory sock creature just before the start of the race.

They maintained their ACE through the sand.

Things got sticky in the mud; they were unable to provide enough torque to advance.

After considerable effort, they had to give up their ACE; crew and mud volunteers pushed them through.

Zooming down Lombard Street, they left Fifi further and further behind.

Whoa—what happened to the eyes?

Across the finish line.

The rules require each sculpture to carry a Homemade Sock Creature. Special Judges Theo and Max (ages 7 and 4) chose the best, and awarded Sock Creature of the Universe to Scrap Dragon.

After accepting the trophy, the team gave the award-winning sock creature to Theo and Max.

Jemicy’s 2-pilot sculpture is Tandem Templar featuring horses on each side. Curiously, the horses face backward.

It entered the Bush League, planning to bypass the water. They started out smoothly.

Just before turning from Pratt Street onto President Street, they had to stop for repairs.

Drivetrain chain problem.

Ready to attack the sand!

Indeed, the wide tires readily crossed the sand.

They did need pushing in the mud.

Back to the Museum!

The pilot in the back doesn’t have steering, but looks like he’s running the show by acting like his sculpture is a chariot.

There’s a poodle behind us.

Ellen is taller than she looks here.

Here’s the Tandem Templar team.

Jemicy’s solo-pilot sculpture this year is Dragon Wagon, a trike with two narrow steering wheels in front and one fat drive wheel in back.

Rounding the ACE buoy, Dragon Wagon let out celebratory pink smoke.

With coaching and encouragement, Dragon Wagon maintained its ACE exiting the water.

If we’ve got this right, Jemicy has entered 82 sculptures in the 21 races since 2004:

By successfully transiting the sand and mud without assistance, Dragon Wagon was the only Jemicy entry this year to win an ACE Award.
