Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race
2026 Race Report: Ant-thropology

Here's a Sculpture!
< Previous Page Next Page >

Ant-thropology

Ant-thropology from Team Goes to Eleven presents the viewpoint of an insect studying human culture through objects we discard, many of which are of interest to them. The can at the front bears the team name.

All day, volunteer chickens ask spectators to identify their favorite sculpture. Ant-thropology was far ahead of other teams and easily won People’s Choice.

This is the same chassis as 2024’s Dancin’ Fools and 2023’s Cut Out to be Royal (links below) but the rest of the sculpture is totally redesigned for a spectacular new theme.

Their 6 ant-costumed pilots and 4 pull-tab wheels, with the largest milk carton in Baltimore kinetic history, presented a dramatic sight against the Baltimore skyline.

Look closely to see the expiration date carefully marked on the soup can.

For water propulsion, they swapped out the drink can lids for paddlewheels.

They carefully tagged human specimens for scientific study, including the Rampmaster.

Bee-costumed pit crew swarmed the Rampmaster before the water entry.

Look closely at the undercarriage to see their otherwise-impressive ground clearance filled with beefy pontoons.

They had a smooth low-splash water entry.

Calm harbor that day.

They had an easy ride through the sand.

At the mud they adjusted the drive train so the front two left pilots directly powered the front left wheel, and the front two right pilots the front right wheel,

For extraordinary torque on the back wheels, as you can see in this photo, the two pilots in back stood and turned around to simultaneously implement a special device shown in the next photo.

In 2024, they had a hand-operated “Rach-matic Mud Walker Drive System”, but it did not get their large craft through the mud. This year, they made it foot-operated for more power, while retaining the direct-drive lever-arm approach. With this improvement, they made it through the mud!

To ensure they had time to use the Ratch-matic, pit crew were told not to consider pushing unless the pilots gave a signal. So the crew tossed dice and bet on the odds of succesful mud transit.

The People’s Choice!

Ant-thropology is the 13th glorious sculpture from Goes to Eleven:
