You’re My Boy, Blue! from Phil Smith and family is a rugged 4-wheel sculpture.
During this race, team Blue achieved an ACE Award for competing at the much tougher level. This is his fifth ACE in Baltimore and eleventh overall including six in Lowell, Massachusetts.

It has two drive wheels up front with tires gnarled enough for traction in sand and mud, but smooth enough for reasonable rolling resistance on pavement and stone. The free-rolling rear wheels just keep the sculpture from inefficiently scraping along the ground.

Like a combination of a seat belt and airbag, the blue hoop in front of the pilot provides unparalleled safety in the event of a high-speed crash. Actually, that’s not true at all.
ACE sculptures are required to bring all gear for all terrain and water with them at times on the racecourse. Here you can see the paddlewheel ready for action.

At the sand he tested the super-low gear hand crank.

It’s probably ok now to blow his cover, but that looks like Mike Roundy, Race Director for the Lowell Kinetic Sculpture Race

At the mud the hand crank and pedals were all necessary to get through.

Through the mud!
