Bear Necessities from the Park School featured a giant bear made of cardboard strips on a large foam platform.
It was powered by 3 unicyclists: 1 in front, 2 in the back.
They rode high on the water—so high they were metastable at best.
Not long after entering the water, the sculpture fell onto its back, plunging its pilots into the harbor.
Then as its hydrocatastrophic denouement, the bear came off the platform and started sinking. The Fire Department kept things from getting worse.
The 2 pieces were brought back out the route they went in.
Pit Crew performed CPR.
The Bear was placed back on the platform and continued the race.
The Park School has now entered seven times, and won 2 Golden Flippers:
They made it all the way to the finish line, much further than last year.
As everyone expected, the dramatic experience on the water made Bear Necessities a shoo-in for Golden Flipper awarded to the “most interesting water entry”.
