What to Wear to the Race

Highly recommended: Karen Wallace’s Kinetic Costuming Guide.

This is the time to wear something absurd! Lots of onlookers wear all sorts of goofy outfits, and you should too:

Directions from Out of Town

Here are directions to key spots:

  1. AVAM: AVAM is the easiest place to get to from the interstates, particularly I-95. There are directions on the AVAM Website, or you can figure out how to get there from Google Maps.
  2. Canton Waterfront Park: Right on the harbor, you can drive there with these directions from Google Maps.
  3. Patterson Park: A bit further into the city, but not too hard to get to. Get there from Google Maps.

Other Fun Places To See Nearby

If you want to see the sculptures for part of the day, but also see other things Baltimore has to offer, it’s very easy because the race goes through some of the most interesting places in the city. Here are some ideas within walking distance of the race:

  1. AVAM: The KSR sponsor, the American Visionary Art Museum, is a gallery dedicated to intuitive, self-taught artistry—folks who are compelled to create. It’s a great way to spend a few hours, and is where the race begins and ends. Open 10am to 6pm on race day.
  2. Maryland Science Center: A great place for kids, they have science exhibits and an IMAX theatre. Open 10am to 6pm on race day.
  3. Baltimore Museum of Industry: A great place to take kids, with a 1910 pharmacy, an 1886 bank building, an operating steam tugboat, and a flying prototype of a WWII flying boat bomber. Open from 10am to 4pm on race day.
  4. National Aquarium at Baltimore: A world-class aquarium, with sharks, rays, dolphins, a rainforest on the roof, and brightly colored tiny frogs. Another kid-compatible place with fun for adults too. There are dragon paddleboats for rent at the adjacent pier. Admission tickets are available for entry from 9am to 6pm on race day—and buying tickets in advance is recommended.
